Dinah Harris is visiting an old FBI friend, Elise Jones, who is now a detective in a small town. While in town, a body of a junkie is discovered. She has been strangled, but evidence is also found that she might not be who everyone thought she was. Dinah acts as a consultant on the case with Elise heading up the investigation. The many hours of leg work, phone calls and research begin to find the culprit. Evidence leads to the local town pastor as having had contact with the drug addict. Dinah soon discovers he had known the addict while he was in college 20 years before. Then, another woman’s body is also found strangled. She had worked a series of temporary jobs, but was known to move around a lot and not settle down. She, too, was also known to the pastor from his college days. She has multiple passports and social security numbers just like those found in the addict’s apartment. What do these three people have in common? While Dinah and Elise work long hours to gather information and question potential witnesses or culprits, Elise’s 15-year-old daughter is in her sophomore year in school. She is a good student, but most of the other kids think she is a nerd. Her best friend and only friend is the local pastor’s daughter. As Elise continues to question the pastor as she thinks he is hiding something, the friendship between her daughter and his daughter shows signs of tension. Stretched to the breaking point, the friendship snaps. Now, Chloe is truly alone and doesn’t know where to turn.
This is not just a murder mystery, but a powerful story about racial injustice and bullying. These are two terrible acts that are prevalent in our society today. The bullies in the story are extremely cruel and hateful to someone who is different. They commit a terrible crime that has devastating results. The perpetrators of racial injustice in the past are now reaping the consequences of their actions with some dying while another faces the past. The author does a masterful job of storytelling that drew me in to the tale immediately and pulled my heartstrings with Chloe’s story. This is a book that plunges to deep depths of sorrow for some and regret for others. There is hope in the end, but at a high cost. I got completely involved in the story, letting my emotions ride along with those of some of the characters in the story. I look forward to Dinah’s next mystery!

The Dark Heart Dinah Harris Mystery Julie Cave 9781683440130 Books Reviews
Julie Cave may be one of my favorite authors. Her ability to weave a tale of faith intermingled with mystery and suspense is almost beyond comparison. She is a talented author, there is no doubt.
I first discovered her books several years ago, when I reviewed a couple of novels from her Dinah Harris series The Shadowed Mind and Deadly Disclosures. The Dark Heart is the fourth novel featuring Dinah Harris, and it may very well be the best yet.
Author Julie Cave writes a captivating fictional story, but she deals with the harsh realities of modern culture in doing so. Her character, Dinah Harris, is a recovering alcoholic who must deal with the tragic loss of her family. The depression and despair that come through seem almost real at times. The circumstances that define Harris’ life are detailed in the first novel, but are touched on briefly in this one as well. However, I don’t think you need to read them in sequential order.
In The Dark Heart, dark realities are present as well. Drug abuse and racism, and even the issue of bullying come to light in this novel, and Cave deals with them in a way that pulls no punches. Each of these are horrific in their own ways, and many people struggle with these issues. As Dinah Harris digs into this murder, seeking to solve the crime before another can be committed, Cave deals with each of these issues in a way that exemplifies her own faith in God.
And in the end, faith triumphs. Not in the ways we always want it to, but God works through all of the circumstances in order to bring about his will. This happens in the book, and it happens in real life.
I was once again captivated by Julie Cave’s tales, and I highly recommend that you pick up The Dark Heart and read it. Or, you can begin with Deadly Disclosures, The Shadowed Mind, or Pieces Of Light.
I received this book free from Julie Cave in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Julie Cave, as she has in this series, has created an interesting mystery that will keep you guessing, dealing with items to think about. Cave doesn't shy away from topics that may make the reader uncomfortable and this book is no exception (racism is one of the issues).
Do you need to read the stories in order to enjoy this? Not necessarily. You won't feel lost if you haven't read the other three, nor will the previous stories be spoiled by this one (except for the mention of a romantic interest; no, that's not a major derailment). I will admit that there was more development of Dinah Harris' character in the three previous stories - here, she has more of the role of, say, Hercule Poirot - more of the problem solver, with the side characters being the ones who are more developed. Allow me to add that the villainous Senator from the previous three doesn't show up here, to my disappointment.
This is a hard book to review without spoiling the story. I'll just mention again that it deals with difficult subject matter, and add that while I enjoy Cave's writing, there are things I'd consider weaknesses some readers may not be as tolerant of as I am. But I would recommend one read it at their own risk. I will add that I do consider this suitable for teenagers, but I would also recommend that parents also read it and then ask their teens what they think - this could provoke some very beneficial discussions.
This is Christian fiction. The other books are strong on creationism. This volume has a part that is a bit preachy, but it deals more with the problems of racism than anything theological.
To summarize, this is not everybody's book. The reader may conclude like me that the strengths of this book make up for the weaknesses, or they may not. I still recommend it.
